SDI is an acronym for serial digital interface, a digital video interface standard developed by the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) organization, which has been widely adopted by many industries for Transmission of uncompressed, unencrypted digital video signals.
12G-SDI defines the transmission rate of 12 Gbit/s, its bandwidth is 8 times that of ordinary HD-SDI, and can support SDI signals up to 4Kp60 resolution and higher bit rate, so it is also compatible with HD/3G-SDI, etc. previous standard. 12G-SDI has three connection methods, including single-link 12G-SDI, dual-link 6G-SDI and quad-link 3G-SDI.
Most of the high-definition 4K professional cameras on the market use 4 channels of BNC to transmit 12G-SDI signals at the same time, and most mainstream medical endoscopes and monitors also use 4 links. With the development of technology, there are also some cameras with 12G-SDI output interface, such as the Sony PXW-Z280 handheld all-in-one camera, so that only one SDI cable that meets the 12G-SDI transmission standard is needed to directly transmit 4Kp60 images.
12G-SDI integrates 4 cables that transmit 3G-SDI signals into one, and directly transmits 4K audio and video, which reduces the number of cables used for transmission, makes the structure simpler, and the picture quality is more stable. It should be noted that the higher the transmission rate of the SDI signal, the higher the requirements for the wire, and the transmission distance will also be affected.
